A step-by-step guide to writing A-Level General Paper essays using the PEEL format, with tips on counter-arguments and essay structure.
A strong GP essay follows a clear structure. Here are the four sections every essay should have:
PEEL is a paragraph structure that keeps your arguments focused and well-supported. Use it for every body paragraph.
P — Point
State your argument in one clear sentence. This is the topic sentence of your paragraph.
E — Explanation
Elaborate on the reasoning behind your point in 2–3 sentences. Explain why your argument is valid and how it connects to the question.
E — Example
Provide specific real-world evidence to support your argument. Singapore examples are only needed if the question says "in your society". Use recent, relevant examples wherever possible.
L — Link
Connect your argument back to the essay question to show relevance. This closing sentence ties the paragraph together and reinforces your stand.
A counter-argument shows the examiner that you can consider multiple perspectives. Here's how to do it well:
Each essay question on Hello Cher shows arguments for both sides in PEEL format. Pick a side, use the 3 PEEL arguments from that column, then look at the other column for a counter-argument to address. The amber "Counter-Argument & Rebuttal" section shows you exactly how to do this.
